The Faculty of Science, Kunming University of Science and Technology is an educational and scientific research center that combines science and technology, but it mainly concentrates on science. It is especially based on overlapping learning branches combining mathematics, physics with information, electronics and computer. The faculty takes charge of two learning tasks. The first is to lecture the basic disciplines which include mathematic, physics and chemistry to each level of students for the whole university. The second is to train the undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students in different majors of engineering and science. It also does research in basic science and overlapping learning.

There is a staff group of 167 in the faculty. Among them, there are 33 professors,61 associate professors,40 lecturers and 30 associate lecturers. A professor is taking the privilege of receiving special subvention from the State Councils as the state-level experts for his remarkable contribution. Two professors are Ph.D. supervisors. There are 5 professors who enjoy government especial allowance. Two young professors are Yunnan Provincial-level reserve talents of academic and technological leaders. The faculty has invited a number of academician and concurrent professors.

The are three departments in the faculty of science, namely the Department of Systematic Science and Applied Mathematics, the Department of Electronic Science and Applied Physics and the Department of Applied chemistry. There are 5 research institutes, including the institute of Systematic Theory and Non-Linear Science, the institute of Laser, the Mini Mechanical and electronic research center, the optical fiber technology Research Center and applied Electrochemistry. There are 11 teaching and research groups and 3 labs.

There are 4 undergraduate majors, which are Information Science and Calculation Mathematics, Electronics Information Science and Technology, Electronics Science and Technology and Applied Chemistry. More than 800 students study in the faculty. Applied Mathematics, Systematic and Physical Electronics offers Master degrees. Two Ph.D. supervisors supervise Ph.D. students together with the engineering mechanics and material science majors that offer Ph.D. degrees. They have been cooperating with many universities in France and have cultivated more 40 graduate students and 3 Ph.D. students in the recent 10 years.

The faculty is making reform on teaching and has achieved greatly. It is on its way of contribution to development of becoming a university with strong background in science and engineering as its unique characteristics, a university with its leading position in Yunnan province, advanced position in china and well-known position in the world.
